Fr. Gabriel Calvo at Barcelona, Spain established the marriage encounter in the early 1960's. "Encounter" does not mean a battle or a fight between couples rather it is a rediscovery of the endearing qualities of the husband or wife, kaya nga ang tawag sa Pilipino "tuklasan".
The marriage encounter weekend seminar was later introduced in the USA in 1967 where Fr. Ruben Tanseco and spouses Sito and Sony Sison attended. In the same year, they put up a team and introduced it in the Philippines as an apostolic program of the Christian Family movement (CFM). From then on, the Marriage Encounter Movement has spread throughout the country and has reached thousands of Filipino families. Only a few changes has been made in order to adapt to the Filipino culture, traditions and to the needs of our countrymen. Thus, the seminars given in the weekend is the official Philippine expression of the ME as prescribed by the MEFP, a mandated organization of the CatholicChurch to which all ME communities are members.
